The kids issues didn't go away overnight.Parenting is hard. Broke the biracial teen 'daughter' trope, didn't turn Bernie into a cookie baking father but allowed fatherhood to still change him, it was interesting and high up on realism for a sitcom. If they were smart enough to pull elaborate tricks on Bernie, they could have taken on more difficult coursework at school.Īll around, well-written show. The kids needed to be pushed more academically. Limited background scenes? Most scenes were in/around the house, right? dynamic could be read as problematic but was also super realistic and had elements of truth in it.
The Jordan/Bernie "this boy is too soft", 'ain't right" etc. Mixing it up with a therapist, could have added a lot to the show(and explained that the kids issues are serious). Bernie in therapy, in addition to breaking the fourth wall would have been hilarious. That's "unpopular" because people act like it's a breeze. I think this is one of the few shows that actually tried to be honest with how difficult adopting or taking care of children, who aren't yours can be. Lack of explaining this enough, labeled Vanessa in the beginning as a black girl with an attitude, instead of a wounded kid with massive trust issues for a good reason. There were hints of understanding in the writing, but more was needed.
Didnt like Vanessa's problems just being described as "attitude", when she likely had serious trauma from being raised by a drug-addicted mother, and being forced to care for her siblings like her own children. Didn't like Bernie threatening to whup Vanessa, or doing it off screen? She was too old for physical punishment, and had already been through too much. The couple wanting the two younger kids, and not really being prepared to take care of a teen. There was a common RL dynamic that was never really solved.
Wanda didn't get enough scenes with Vanessa, that I can remember.
